Arriving at the Edge of the Dunes

Arriving at the Edge of the Dunes

The road ends where the sand begins. A house of clay-toned walls sits among date palms, its windows turned toward the dunes. From the gravel path, the first thing you notice is the scent of warm stone and the faint movement of palm fronds overhead.

Inside, a John Pawson bathroom opens off the bedroom, its fittings chosen with the same restraint as the walls around them.

Where Designer-Led Elements Meet Purpose

Every surface takes its color from the land outside. Walls are finished in plaster. Floors are poured and left with mineral marks, streaked with rust and slate where the light falls across them. Linen curtains and raw oak soften the room, while woven rattan carries the same warm tone up toward the ceiling. Fixtures from the John Pawson collection for COCOON follow the same thinking - few lines, honest materials, nothing added for show.

Four Steps to the Bath

The COCOON MIGUEL bath in Beach sits between the bed and the view, four steps from the pillow.
The JP 35.2 floor-mounted spout in Brushed Gold rises straight out of the concrete and curls over the rim. The sound of water striking the base of the tub carries through the whole room and out onto the terrace.

An Island Cut from Stone

The kitchen island is one block of stone streaked in copper and grey, its veins running down the sides and spilling across the top.
The sink is carved directly into it. The sink has the JP-09.3 kitchen mixer in Brushed Gold arching over it smoothly. Two woven pendants hang over the counter, and daylight passes through their weave.

Two Columns at the Door

The Cocoon bathroom opens off the bedroom through a deep plaster frame.
A COCOON COLUMN basin in Beach stands on each side of the opening, a solid cylinder of stone. The symmetry borrows from traditional bathroom design, where paired basins frame a doorway, but here the forms are stripped back to almost nothing.

Each basin has its own JP SET02 wall-mounted mixer in Brushed Gold reaching out from the plaster, with a round brass-rimmed mirror set directly above.

Rain From the Roof

The shower sits at the back under a narrow skylight. Its rear wall is built from thin wooden battens of uneven length, so each one catches the light from above at a slightly different height.
The JP 31 ceiling-mounted rain shower drops water straight down through the light, and the JP 32.1 hand shower hangs lower on the wall for rinsing off.

A Wall Shaped by the Dune Behind It

Out by the pool, a freestanding plaster wall dips along its edge in a long curve that follows the dune beyond. The JP 37 floor-mounted shower in Brushed Gold stands against it, a single thin shower with a hooked head.

Light & Shadow

Coins of Light on the Wall

In the bedroom, round openings are punched through the upper wall in clusters of three. Each one throws a bright disc onto the plaster opposite, and the discs creep slowly down across the macramé hangings as the sun climbs.

Every Step Different

A Floor That Keeps Its Marks

Walk across the poured floor and you feel it change underfoot, smooth in one place and textured in the next.

Catching the Glow

Gold That Holds the Low Sun

Brushed Gold has a soft surface that catches low sunlight and keeps it. As the dunes shift from orange to rose, every spout and valve picks up that color, from the hook above the kitchen sink to the bath standing by the pool.

As Night Falls

Windows Left Open

The curtains stay open and the stone of the tub and the column holds the warmth of the dessert. Outside, the pool darkens under the palms while the dunes slowly lose their edges against the sky
