Hidden Hills: A Natural Stone Bathroom & Kitchen

Hidden Hills: A Natural Stone Bathroom & Kitchen

How does one transform a 14,000-square-foot house into a warm, inviting sanctuary? This question guided designer Dorothy Macik in shaping this architectural residence in the secluded community of Hidden Hills, California, just outside Los Angeles.

Hand-picked natural stone with a refined finish runs throughout the home, from kitchen to bathroom. Paired with warm wood tones and soft daylight, the material brings calm and cohesion, grounding the scale of the residence in a sense of timeless elegance.

Where Designer-Led Elements Meet Purpose

Studio: Dorothy Macik Design - Photography: Madeline Tolle

Guided by a vision of timeless, functional beauty, Dorothy Macik shaped the residence through a careful selection of organic materials, bringing warmth and balance to its architectural scale.

Within this context, John Pawson’s collaboration with COCOON finds a natural place. Rooted in his pursuit of simplicity and proportion, the shower and tapware used in this project are from the John Pawson Collection and reflect his signature harmony of form, material, and light, introducing a quiet sense of clarity and refined restraint.

A Shower Defined by Stillness and Proportion

Framed in glass and natural stone, the shower feels open and quiet. The floor-mounted and ceiling-mounted showers are reduced to their essential forms. Water, light, and material come together in a composition defined by clarity, balance, and restraint.

A Kitchen Set in Stone

In the kitchen, stone countertops reflect the beauty of simple geometric forms. Clean lines and carefully considered proportions give the island a sculptural presence, while the minimal tapware integrates seamlessly. Material, form, and function align in a composition defined by clarity.

A Moment of Quiet Precision

Natural stone, soft light, and reflection define this basin. The tapware sits calmly within the surface, its form highlighting the geometry of the space around it. Rather than standing apart, the basin becomes part of the architectural rhythm.

Where texture meets calm

The Kitchen as a Place of Warmth

The suede wallpaper paired with wood cladding on the interior ceilings evoke a sense of intimacy. Together, these materials soften the architectural scale of the kitchen, allowing the natural stone to feel grounded and warm. Light moves gently across the room, creating a space that feels both composed and inviting.

Looking out into the Garden

The Kitchen and Dining

From the kitchen, the view opens toward the dining area and garden. Dorothy handpicked century-old olive trees, trailing rosemary, and native grasses that extend the kitchen beyond its walls. Large openings frame the rolling hills of Hidden Hills, allowing light, greenery, and calm to combine interior and exterior.

A place to pause

A Room Shaped for Retreat

Beyond the bathroom and kitchen, the pool-like bathing space is set within an open architectural frame, allowing light and greenery to remain present. Defined by light, water, and warm materials, this space extends the calm of the residence. It is a place for slowing down.

Everyday balance

The Basin as a Quiet Anchor in the Bathroom

Stepping inside the bathroom, the space is defined by natural stone. The basin becomes a central point within the bathroom. Clean lines and soft proportions allow the material to take the stage, while light from outside brightens the surface.

Framed by the landscape

The Shower Opening to the Hills

Set behind clear glass, the shower looks out toward the hills of Hidden Hills. Light, water, and landscape come together in a composed architectural frame. The boundary between inside and outside softens, allowing the daily ritual of showering to unfold in quiet connection with its surroundings.

A final quiet detail

Returning to Simplicity

The basin and tapware reveal the strength of restraint. Natural materials, soft light, and precise proportions come together. It is a moment of balance and clarity, where design and function align, bringing the bathroom story to a calm and considered close.
